One of the many benefits of attending The Academy of Arts and Knowledge has to do with our gifted and talented program. For students who exhibit gifted traits, we offer a specialized program to help ensure that they are able to grow as much as their classmates, providing them with the educational environment that best suits their needs. With this in mind, in part one of our blog series, we’ll look at a few typical traits of gifted children.

Specific and/or Diverse Interests

While all children have a tendency to jump around in relation to their interests at a young age, if you notice that your child exhibits an intense interest in a wide variety of things, there’s a chance that they may be gifted. Needing stimulation and finding pleasure in a variety of areas, and excelling in those areas, may indeed be a sign that your child is operating in a way that others may not. Pay attention to their interests and hobbies. Do they pursue a variety of activities, only to find themselves getting bored with them and moving onto something else? This may indeed be a sign that your child has a gift.

On the other hand, if your child shows an intense focus and particular fondness for one particular interest or hobby, this too could be a sign that your child may have a gift. Whether they are constantly talking about this particular hobby at all times or cannot be pulled away from it, children who exhibit a focus on intense fondness for one particular area have been known to be gifted. When the time comes to go to the library, watch movies or otherwise, if you notice that your child’s preference always moves toward a particular area of interest, this may mean more than you realize. Pay attention to these choices and encourage their development.

Sensitive and Highly Emotional

One of the challenges of raising a children has to do with helping them understand the needs and feelings of others. Teaching empathy can sometimes be a challenge, but if your child is more emotional and sensitive than others, there’s a chance that they may be gifted. There is, of course, two sides to this. On one hand, sensitive children sometimes have a tendency to take things more personally than others, becoming incredibly emotional over interactions with others kids, teachers, or adults, when in fact no harm was meant on the other person’s end. The flipside to this, of course, is that this allows them the ability to be more empathetic toward others, being able to put themselves in the position of the other person and think about how they would feel if they were in their position.
